WASHINGTON, DC --
North Carolina Central University head football coach Rod Broadway
and senior wide receiver Torey Ross have been selected as the
Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Coach and Player of
the Year, respectively, by The Pigskin Club of Washington, DC, Inc.
The Eagles' duo will be honored at the Pigskin Club's 68th Annual
Awards Dinner on Friday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. inside the Capital Hilton
Hotel in Washington, D.C.
“The Annual Awards Dinner is a celebration to acknowledge the
accomplishments of our young people and community leaders who serve as
role models,” said William Chesley, President of the historical Pigskin
Club. “We are focused on recognizing the best and brightest in
interscholastic, collegiate, professional sports, and the civic arenas;
providing us the opportunity to complement the future, present and the
past.”
In just three seasons at the helm of the NCCU football program,
Broadway has resurrected a proud winning tradition. He has collected
more wins in his first three campaigns than any other coach in school
history with an overall record of 22-10, including 17 victories in the
past 20 games.
In 2005, Broadway guided his team to the most wins in school
history, finishing with an overall record of 10-2. It was also the first
time in the school's proud gridiron tradition that the Eagles posted
back-to-back seasons with eight or more victories (8-2 in 2004). Along
the way, NCCU captured the 2005 CIAA Championship, its first in 25
years, by rallying from a 17-0 halftime deficit to defeat Bowie State in
the title game. The Eagles earned a No. 2 ranking in the final Southeast
Regional poll, the highest in school history, and a first-round bye in
the NCAA Division II Playoffs, their first postseason appearance since
1988. The Eagles also made history by becoming the highest scoring team
in the school's record books, tallying 370 points for an average of 30.8
points per game. Broadway was recognized as the CIAA Coach of the Week
four times in 2005 (Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 8, Oct. 15).
As a senior team captain, Ross topped the CIAA and broke NCCU's
single-season receptions record with 69 catches for 846 yards and eight
touchdowns. His 846 receiving yards ranks sixth on the school's
single-season list. During a standout campaign, he caught the
game-winning 46-yard touchdown pass against Division I-AA rival North
Carolina A&T (Sept. 5), tied a career-best with three touchdown
receptions against Edwards Waters (Aug. 27), and recorded a single-game
NCCU personal-best nine receptions at Lenoir-Rhyne (Sept. 10).
Ross has also been named to the East All-Star squad for the 13th
annual Whataburger Cactus Bowl game (Jan. 6, 2006, in Texas
A&M-Kingsville’s Javelina Stadium), featuring the top NCAA Division II
football players in the nation.
In just two seasons at NCCU (2004-05), Ross amassed 122 catches for
1,485 yards and 19 touchdowns. Among NCCU career leaders, he ranks
seventh in receptions, 10th in receiving yards, and is tied for fifth in
touchdown receptions. During his tenure, the team posted best
back-to-back seasons in school history (8-2 in 2004, 10-2 in 2005),
winning 18 of 22 games while at NCCU, including the CIAA Championship in
2005.
