Maryland Higher
Education Secretary James E. Lyons, Sr., on December 19, 2007 named
longtime educator George W. Reid, Ph.D., as his new Assistant
Secretary of Planning and Academic Affairs.
“I am very pleased
that Dr. Reid has agreed to share his considerable talents with us at
MHEC,” Dr. Lyons said. “He has years of experience working at
institutions of higher learning. We really hit a home run by bringing
him here to help bolster our already outstanding system of higher
education in Maryland.”
Dr. Reid received his
doctorate from Howard University in American history in 1975, and his
A.B. and M.A. degrees in history at North Carolina Central University
from 1967-69.
“The opportunity to
be able to work with Dr. Lyons and the many talented staff members at
MHEC is a great challenge and a new and exciting step in my career in
higher education,” Dr. Reid said. “Maryland has many great
institutions of higher learning. They are certainly a model that other
states are sure to follow.”
Dr. Reid comes to
MHEC after serving as Vice President for College Relations for College
Loan Corporation (CLC), the seventh largest company of its kind. His
duties as vice president at CLC were to develop higher education
financing business relationships and opportunities with the leaders of
all minority colleges and universities in the United States as well as
federal territories where college students can borrow federal
government loans to finance their education.
From 1998-2002, Dr.
Reid was President of Kentucky State University, one of the eight
state-supported Universities in Kentucky. During his tenure as
president at KSU, Dr. Reid supervised four vice presidents and three
cabinet executives as well as 150 full-time faculty members.
Before his presidency
at KSU, Dr. Reid was founding Dean of the University College at North
Carolina Central University (NCCU) then moved on to be Vice President
for Academic Affairs at Savannah State College (now University) from
1990-1994. From 1994-1998, Dr. Reid was appointed Dean of the
University College at the University of Cincinnati. He then was
appointed Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at
Benedict College from 1996-1998.
After being President
of, KSU, Dr. Reid was selected to be a Director at the National
Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), the
Association that represents all 118 historically black colleges and
universities.
Dr. Reid lives in
Glenarden, MD, with his wife, Mae. He has six children. Dr. Reid is a
member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the NCCU DC Chapter.
