NCCU's Sports Information Director Inducted into the Hall of Fame
 

NCCU inducted 11 individuals and three teams into the Alex M. Rivera Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, October 20th in Durham, NC
at the Millennium Hotel.

The eleven individuals inducted:

 

1.     Melvin Bassett (Track – 1971 -74), a seven time track All-American and four-time National Champion.
 

2.     Evangela Booker Country (Track – 1991-94), an eight-time track All-American and two-time CIAA cross country champion.
 

3.     Ron Draper (Track), a five time track All-American and member of the NAIA National Champion 440-yard relay team.
 

4.     Gerald Patton (Football – 1982-85), a three time All-CIAA offensive lineman.
 

5.     Joe Simmons (Football – 1990-93), NCCU’s all-time leading rusher with 2,840 career ground yards, including a school record 1,699 yards rushing in 1993.
 

6.     Richard Wilkins (Football – 1954-55, 1959-61), an All-CIAA and All-American running back who holds the school record for the longest kickoff return (102 yards vs. Shaw, Oct. 28, 1961).
 

7.    John Barbee, a four-year football starter and 1972 All-MEAC selection as a defensive tackle.
 

8.    Kevin Holloway, a business leader and contributor to NCCU Athletics.
 

9.    Tony Medlin, an award-winning equipment manager with the NFL’s Chicago Bears who served in the same capacity at NCCU from 1978-86.
 

10.  Eric Montgomery, a three-year NCCU football team captain who is the president of the Charlotte NCCU Alumni Association and a contributor to Eagle Athletics.

 

11.  Kyle Serba, a four time recipient of the CIAA Sports Information Director of the Year Award who is now in his 13th season as SID at NCCU.

 

Three teams inducted were:

1.     1954 Football Team, winners of the CIAA Championship and the Black College National Championship.
 

2.    The 1974 Track and Field Team, winners of the MEAC Championship and the Fourth Place Finishers at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Tack and Field.
 

3.   The 1975 Tennis Team, winners of the third straight MEAC Championship.
