DURHAM, NC - On Sunday, May 3, 2009, members of Durham’s Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. held their Building Dedication and Mortgage Burning Ceremony at their new headquarters at 4222 Fayetteville Road.
Some 200 community persons joined the approximately 200 members of the chapter for this memorable occasion. Guest toured the building, enjoyed a wonderful reception; participated in the dedication of the new Ivy Community Center (ICC), and finally witnessed the Mortgage Burning Ceremony.
Joining the sorority members were elected officials such as Mayor Pro-Tem, Cora Cole-McFadden and Durham County Commissioner Chairman; Rev. Michael Page; community leaders like NCCU Chancellor, Dr. Charles Nelms; representatives from the Lowes Corporation, and family and friends that included AKA’s from other chapters as well as representatives from other sororities and fraternities in the triangle area.
During the dedication ceremony, Janeen Gammage, president of the ICC Corporation, thanked the community for its support, the Lowe's representatives for their patience and care in dealing with the sorority members throughout the building process, attorneys who assisted the chapter and all who contributed in making this opening and mortgage burning possible.
