Alumnus and NCCU Football Hall of Fame Member Dies


DURHAM -- Benjamin E. Carrington, Sr. passed away on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at Duke Hospital.

Carrington was born and raised in Durham, N.C. He graduated from Hillside High School in 1963. He was a 1970 alumnus of North Carolina Central University where he played football. He was a member of the NCCU Football Team that won the 1963 CIAA Football Championship. Members of the 1963 team were inducted into the NCCU Hall of Fame in 2005 including Carrington.

Carrington was a former Durham police officer and worked in various aspects of the Durham School System. He was a proud member of the Beta Phi Graduate Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Carrington was proceeded in death in 2005 by his Sister, Dora Carrington, who was a 1959 NCCU Alumnus, a Member of the DC Alumni Chapter and the First Female President of the NCCU National Alumni from 1982-1986.

Carrington is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Carrington; two daughters, Nichelle and Kishia; two sons, Benjamin Jr. and Kevin; two grandchildren Ayanna and Jalen; sister Emily Carrington. Services will be held on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at White Rock Baptist Church at 1:30 p.m. The viewing will be held at 12 noon followed by an Omega Memorial Service at 1 p.m.
