SEVERN, MD - On Tuesday. January 4, 2011, The Rev. Dr. Willie Otto Kent, beloved husband of Gwendolyn Lucille Kent, father of Hope Ellen and Troy, and pastor of Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Severn, MD transitioned from this life into eternal life.

Rev. Kent was born on September 6, 1946 in Lucama, North Carolina.  After graduation from High School in 1964 he matriculated at North Carolina College now known as North Carolina Central University (NCCU).  While at NCCU, he majored in Mathematics with a Minor in Chemistry.   Also while at NCCU, he became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the NCCU Honor Society. 

The current Metro DC Webmaster was a classmate of Rev. Kent and describes him as a polite, friendly, focused, confidence and intelligent leader that inspired his Junior Class to elect him to the office of the President in 1967. 

He graduated in 1968 with honors and was inducted into the Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges.

On June 14, 1969, he married his college sweetheart, Gwendolyn and from their union are a daughter, Hope Ellen and a son, Troy.

Rev. Kent worked for the Federal government with NASA, Labor, and Health and Human Services. His hobbies were fishing, photography and technology. 

Rev. Kent received a Master's degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Masters of Divinity Degree with honors from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D. C. He did his Field Education in Urban Ministry in the Columbia Heights and Adams-Morgan area of Washington, DC. He was ordained Deacon in 2000 and was ordained an Elder in May 2004. He also holds a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Wesley Theological Seminary. 

He became the full-time Pastor for the Metropolitan United Methodist Church of Severn, MD in 2009. His congregation gave Rev. Kent the title of "Revival Preacher" because he prepared his congregation for a revival in their lives as they lifted up the name of Jesus through fruit bearing adventure of faith celebrations, intentional faith development, faith connections & hospitality, outreach to the community, and faithful sharing of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Rev. Kent was an active member of the NCCU Alumni Association, the Metro DC NCCU Alumni Chapter and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Rev. Kent is survived by his wife of 41 and ½ years, Gwendolyn Lucille Kent, and his daughter, Hope Ellen and son, Troy.  Celebrations of Life (COL) Services were held on Saturday January 8, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Rd., Severna Park, MD 21146 and Interment Services were held after the COL Services at St. Luke's Memorial Cemetery in Upper Marlboro, MD.
