ROCKY MOUNT, NC - Kay Thompson Thomas became the chair of the North Carolina Central University Board of Trustees in 2008. 

Kay received her undergraduate degree from NCCU (formerly North Carolina College at Durham) in 1966 and a Master from Lynchburg College in 1970.

Kay began her professional experiences as a Teacher in 1966 at Campbell County Schools in Rustburg, Virginia.  She left Rustburg, VA in 1970 and moved to Baltimore County Maryland.  In the fall of 1973, she relocated to Rocky Mount, North Carolina were she worked in the classroom at Johnson Elementary, Holland Elementary and Baskerville Elementary Schools. She worked in the classroom until her appointment to an administration position in 1990. 

The administration positions  that she held prior to her retirement in 2005 included:
1. Assistant Principal of Johnson Elementary School from 1990 - 1996;   2. Principal of Spaulding Elementary School from   1996 - 1997; 3. Principal of Swift Creek Elementary School from 1997 - 1999 and 4. Personnel - Director of Teacher Resource Programs from 1999 - 2005. 

Kay joined the North Carolina Central University Board of Trustees in 2003. Since becoming a member of the Board of Trustees, she was on the following committees: 1. Academic Planning Committee, 2. Endowment Committee, 3. Executive Committee, 4. Personnel Committee and 5. Trustee Student Relations Committee. 

In 2005, she became Co-Chairman and remained in this position until her appointment as Chair of the NCCU Board of Trustees in 2008.

Kay is the recipient of numerous community and civic awards, two awards that she received from NCCU are the Chancellor's Distinguished Alumnus Award and the NCCU National Alumni Association Alumnus of the Year Award (2002).

Kay is married to Donald Thomas (NCCU '65) and they have one Son - Sean Antoine Thomas (NCCU '95 & '98).

Kay is a Member of St. John AME Zion Church of Rocky Mount, NC.  At St. John AME, she is the Church's Secretary/Treasurer and the Secretary for the Trustee Board.  She is also a member of the Choir.         

Kay interests are: Supporting NCCU, Mentoring Young Educational Professionals and Youth, Attending Sports Events, especially football games, Working Puzzles and Traveling.
